UPSC Engineering Services Examination

UPSC i.e. Union Public Service Commission is a constitutional body in India which conducts examinations for recruitment in various civil services. The first Public Service Commission was set up in the year 1926 by the British Indian Government.

UPSC conducts Engineering Services Examination for appointment in various engineering services. There are 4 different categories for which exams are conducted. These are Civil, Mechanical, Electrical and Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering.
UPSC is conducted for the following services & posts. These are -

  1. Civil Engineering – Indian Railway Service of Engineers, Central Engineering Service, Central Water Engineering (Gr. A) Service, Assistant Executive Engineer (Civil) in the Border Roads Engineering Service, (Gr. A), Indian Railway Stores Service, Indian Defense Service of Engineers, Central Engineering Service (Roads) Group-A, Assistant Executive Engineer (QS&C) in Military Engineering Service, Gr.A.
  2. Mechanical Engineering : Indian Railway Service of MECHANICAL Engineers, Central Water Engineering (Gr. A) Service, Indian Ordinance Factories Service, Assistant Executive Engineer  Group A in the Corps of EME, Ministry of Defence, Central Electrical & Mechanical Engineering Service, Assistant Executive Engineer (Electrical & Mechanical) (Mechanical Engineering Posts) in Boarder Roads Engineering Service, Group ‘A’, Drilling Engineer (Junior) (Grade A) in the Geological Survey of India, Indian Supply Service, Gr.A, Central Engineering Service (Roads), Gr.A, Indian Railway Stores Service, Central Power Engineering Service, Indian Naval Armament Service, Assistant Naval Store officer Grade I (Mechanical Engineering Posts) in Indian Navy, Indian Inspection Service, Gr.A, Indian Defense Service of Engineers.
  3. Electrical Engineering : Indian Railway Service of Electrical Engineers, Central Electrical & Mechanical Engineering Service, Central Power Engineering Service, Assistant Executive Engineer Group A (Electrical Engineering Posts) in the Corps of E.M.E, Ministry of Defence, Indian Inspection Service, Gr.A, Indian Railway Stores Service, Indian Naval Armament Service, Indian Defense Service of Engineers, Assistant Naval Store officer Grade I (Electrical Engineering Posts) in Indian Navy, Indian Supply Service, Gr.A.
  4. Electronics And Telecommunication Engineering : Indian Railway Service of Signal Engineers, Indian Ordnance Factories Service, Assistant Executive Engineer Group ‘A’ (Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering Posts) in the Corps of E.M.E., Ministry of Defence, Assistant Naval Stores officer Grade I (Electronics & Telecom Engineering Posts) in Indian Navy, Indian Supply Service, Gr.A, Indian Railway Stores Service, Indian Naval Armament Service, Engineer (GCS-Gr.”A”)  in Wireless Planning and Coordination Wing/Monitoring Organization; M/o Communication and Information Technology, Indian Inspection Service, Gr.A.

Eligibility Criteria : Those who wish to apply for this needs to satisfy certain eligibility criteria. The applicant must have engineering degree from a recognized university. The age of the candidate must be between 21 – 30 years of age.

UPSC Engineering Services Exam pattern : The selection is on the basis of written test & personality test. Written test consists of 5 papers. Each paper is of 200 marks. First paper is based on General Ability, Remaining two will be based on respective subjects.
