TOEFL stands for Test Of English and Foreign Language. This is the preliminary test which a individual has to undertake in order to get admission in foreign countries like US, UK, Australia, Canada etc. This is conducted by ETS. This tests the proficiency of the individual in English language.
TOEFL Syllabus : You must be very confused as to how to prepare for TOEFL. But once you go through this syllabus, I am sure you will get rid of your confusion. This test is conducted under 4 sections. The syllabus under each section is as follows :
- Listening Comprehension : This section tests the ability of the applicant to understand conversation in American English. So you must be trained properly in spoken English & Grammar. This will help you the most. There will be short & long conversations. You will be asked one question after short conversation & many questions after long conversation. There will be multiple answers to the questions & you have to choose the correct one. All the questions will be based on the conversations. So try to enhance your understanding of spoken English language.
- Structure & Written Expression : This section includes sentences to test your knowledge of important structural and grammatical elements of standard written English. These sentences include a variety of topics and not specific to any specific field of study.Many of the topics may refer to the United States or Canadian history, culture, art, or literature. However, you do not need to have a prior knowledge of these topics to answer these questions.
- Reading Comprehension – In this section, you will be provided with several short passages. You must read and understand the passage and then answer the questions based on the passage.
- Writing – Measures the ability to write an Essay on a given subject.

Reading Question Type: 3–5 passages (About 700 words each), 12–14 questions each;

Total Time: 60–100 minutes
Listening Question Type:
a) 4–6 lectures (3-5 minutes long, about 500-800 words), 6 questions each; About 30
questions in total
b) 2–3 conversations (about 3 minutes long, about 12-25 exchanges), 5 questions each;
About 12 questions in total
Total No. of Questions: 40+
Total Time: 60–90 minutes
Speaking Question Type:
a) 2 independent tasks (prep time: 15 sec; response time: 45 sec)
b) 2 integrated tasks – Read/Listen/Speak (prep time: 30 sec; response time: 60 sec)
c) 2 integrated tasks – Listen/Speak (prep time: 20 sec; response time: 60 sec)
Total No. of Questions: 6
Total Time: 20 minutes
Writing Question Type:
a) 1 integrated task – Read/Listen/Write (20 minutes) (reading time: 3 min; listening
time: 2 min; writing: 15 min)
b) 1 independent task (30 minutes)
Total No. of Questions: 2
