The Indian Railway is a huge network that runs close to 13,000 trains per day. It also employs 1.4 million people. Not all of them are highly qualified individuals. Since there are so many divisions of the railways, each division takes care of employing people to do various tasks.
Tasks such as signaling, ticket checking, issuing and other clerical jobs require basic education. Technical jobs such as Loco Pilot, Electrical Engineer, Civil Engineer and various such jobs require expertise in the concerned field. What kind of jobs are available in Indian Railways?
Before we go into the education required, we need to know what kind of jobs are available in the Railways. There are 2 main departments concerned with hiring employees for the railways. They are Railway Recruitment Board and Railway Recruitment Cell. Apart from these two boards, candidates will be hired through the UPSC and various other Engineering Services Exams. The jobs in Railways are divided among four groups namely,
- Group A – Gazette Posts
- Group B – Gazette Posts
- Group C – Non- Gazette Posts
- Group D – Non- Gazette Posts
The employees of Group A are of Officer cadre and therefore are hired through the civil service examinations or Engineering Services Exams, etc., A Degree in any discipline is the minimum education needed for Group A posts. An Engineering Degree or MSc. degree is minimum for Engineering services and an MBBS degree for Medical Services. However, employees in the Group B Posts are promoted from Group C posts. No separate examinations are held for the Group B Recruitment. A Special Railway Class Apprenticeship Examination is held to hire Mechanical engineers. HSC or equivalent with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics subjects is the required qualification for SCRA.
Group C Posts are non-gazette subordinate jobs with clerical staff, supervisors, and skilled labor while Group D Recruitment is for the unskilled or semi-skilled posts. Group C and D Recruitment are held by the 19 Railway Recruitment Boards situated in different parts of the country. Some of the jobs in Group C and D are.

The Railway Recruitment Control Board controls the hiring process of all the Railway Recruitment Boards and Railway Recruitment Cells. In addition to the jobs given here, the RRBs also employs teachers, physical instructors, nurses and paramedical staff through various written examinations.
